Espaço Lucio Costa - Brasilia heritage district, Brazil

Escala Brasília was a digital intervention at the heart of Brasília's heritage district. Utilizing projection mapping and interactive content, we transformed the city's historic model into a dynamic canvas, inviting the public to engage with their cultural heritage in novel ways.
Escala Brasília exemplifies a new approach to heritage conservation. Rather than resorting to traditional methods that may compromise the integrity of historic structures, we used the potential of non-destructive interventions to breathe new life into landmarks. By incorporating multimedia elements and interactive features, the project aimed to attract a diverse audience, and deepen connection between the community and its surroundings. This inclusivity is crucial for ensuring the continued relevance of Brasília's cultural heritage, particularly among younger generations who are used to digital experiences.
Brasília is a utopia of the future, chosen as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO for representing a unique urban experience. Brasília set new standards of architectural experimentation and construction techniques, far ahead of its time, which served as a role model for the world. Escala Brasília serves as a contemporary homage to the visionary spirit that shaped Brasília's inception. Embracing innovation and creativity, this project reaffirms the city's DNA of modernity while reaffirming its commitment to preserving its unique heritage for generations to come.

The Model and the Espaço Lucio Costa
Text by Maria Elisa Costa, Lucio Costa's daughter, written for the opening of Escala Brasília
This large model of Brasília was made here in Rio, and when my father, Lucio Costa, saw it ready, he was impressed with the quality and precision of Antônio José's work and made him two requests: first, that he put up the luminous advertisements at Conic, as predicted, and they already existed in the Conjunto Nacional; and second, that he forested, on the model, the "green strips" of ALL superblocks, commenting: "To see if they understand..."
The existence of the model sparked the creation of the "Espaço Lucio Costa" in Praça dos Três Poderes (The Three Powers Square), below the level of the Square so as not to interfere with it visually.
The person responsible for detailing the Space project was the architect Fernando Andrade, and the internal agency was designed by Lucio himself, including the precise choice and arrangement of the images and the blue tone of the back wall (he always said, "this blue comes of cobalt"). On opening day, he spent the entire morning with the painter adjusting exactly the right shade of blue!
With the project Escala Brasília — 4D Model, the residents of Brasília will have the opportunity to get to know their Historic Center better, in other words, the "Pilot Plan," which is no longer the name of a project but the name of a place!
